Interesting discussion going on in my other class regarding media objectivity vs bias.
Basically, my feeling is that although objective journalism is ideal, it shouldn't be legislated. Part of being an informed citizen is to know when to read between the lines and check your facts on other sources. I think this should be emphasized early in schools, like in civics classes. What do you think?
C'mon guys lets get some comments goin.
Sounds good, but I think the problem with that is too many biases end up in school systems. Like in Texas where they no longer teach evolution (or is it the Big Bang? And something about not knowing the founding fathers too...)
ReplyDeleteSo a population could be told, "yeah, check the facts, think for yourself" but if they're only told one point of view, they'll view it as fact, not opinion.
You're right, hm. Well I guess before schools comes parents, so parents should emphasize critical thinking to their kids.
ReplyDeleteI went strait to schools because, unlike parenting, education is something that should be shaped by laws and voting and such.
Don't get me started on Texas:) Beyond what's taught in Texas, apparently the Lone Star state gets to write the textbooks for the whole country. It's explained in this article, but I'm still baffled:

sry to rant, thnks for the comments!
Well you're right, it is shaped by voting, but who is voting is probably more of the problem. And I think most ideas given to kids at that age will stick, so whatever theyre taught first will make the most impact.
ReplyDeleteWhich makes the 1984 type brainwashing in Texas just really, really sad.
